In his
recent book, Leaving-Memories of Romania,
Mihai Grunfeld recounts his childhood growing up as son of holocaust survivors
and the experiences that propelled his escape from Romania in 1969. His parents
were unable to talk about their experiences in the concentration camps but
their lives - and the lives of their two sons - were utterly shaped by the
untold stories. The author will talk about how the process of writing served to
break the silence and begin to heal the past. He will also read excerpts from
his book, which will be available for purchase at the event.
After
leaving Romania, Mihai began a long immigration and lived in Israel, Italy, Sweden,
Canada, and South America before settling in the United States. He lives in
Poughkeepsie, NY where he is a Professor of Hispanic Studies at Vassar College.
